My Running Motivation series continues with the fantastic Emma Joy, who writes her Blog Lipstick and trainers. Emma is a personal trainer, coach and sub 4 hour Marathon runner. What has been your highlight of 2019
It has to be Chicago marathon! One of the major marathons and in an amazing city! I had never been to Chicago before so it was a trip of a lifetime! It will be one to remember & for many reasons. Plus having my family surprise me at the finishing line was just a big ‘WOW’ moment.
What are you most looking forward to in 2020
London & Edinburgh marathon! I am hoping to get a PB in the new year so training will be interesting. London marathon is an incredible event & I can’t wait for the buzz it brings! Plus Edinburgh is meant to be a fast & flat marathon for that elusive PB!
What are your top 3 tips to stay motivated to run
New kit is always a winner. It always feels good to wear something new for a training session.
Running with friends/or a club. Running with others gives you a little bit more motivation to get yourself out there. Once it’s an appointment, you won’t want to let anyone down, plus, having a catch up with some friends will always make you feel better for being out there on those cold, winter nights!
An event/a virtual run. When you have booked a milestone or big event, you are more likely to stick to a training plan. I know I tend to fall off track when I don’t have something specific to aim for & it is very normal to feel this way. However, once something is in the diary, there is more oomph to get on out there!
Another great motivational piece – joy just shines out of her photos as well as her name!
On another point entirely, did I see you’re going to be at the National Running Show in Jan or have I invented that?

Ah, great, I’ll try to catch your talk and say hello. You’re always so motivational and inspirational, and very inclusive of all of us, and I salute you for that. I did just refer to you as “pickupthepacepaul” when I was telling my husband about the running show, and probably should remember that’s not your actual name …
