Barbie vs Ken Run

On 16 December 2023, I took part in the Barbie vs. Ken run. In typical Phoenix Running events style, it was a timed event with the ability to complete as many laps as you want. 4 laps are an official half marathon, and 8 laps are an official marathon. Naturally, I completed 8 laps for a marathon. After completing 30 marathons in 2023, I felt the need to fit one last race in. I had no time pressures or any goal other than to have fun. So, when looking at the various options available, a Barbie and Ken theme certainly jumped to the top of my list. Any excuse to dress up and have a bit of fun, although I’m not sure the kids wanted to be seen with me.

Today was my 31st marathon of 2023 and 58th event with Phoenix Running events. It was also my 146th event towards the 100 marathon club. I made sure I was dressed for the part, and although I didn’t go as far as Rik, who bleached his hair, I was happy to dress the part. I also wore my new adidas Terrex Agravic flow gore-tex trail running shoes 2.0 for their first event.

The conditions can be pretty poor on the towpath, especially if it’s been raining. Today was actually pleasant, and although there were a few puddles and a bit of mud, I didn’t need trail trainers for today. Although I wouldn’t have wanted to get a pair of road trainers that muddy. First outing, they aren’t as comfortable as my adidas Terrex two ultra trail running trainers, but are more ideally suited to tougher trails.

Ready for the Barbie vs Ken run

I arrived just after 08:00, and was not in a rush to get started as I knew my family were joining me at around 14:00, meaning whatever time I finished I would be waiting a bit at the end. It was such a fantastic event, and themed events really bring the best out of people. We had a lot of Barbie and Ken’s out, with many friendly faces.

Come on Barbie let’s go party

Pink was certainly the favourite colour of the day, and we had lots of fun saying “Hey Barbie” and “Hey Ken” as we passed each other.

The gun show

It doesn’t matter how much fun you are having, 26.2 miles is still a long way. I took it really steady and was on pace for sub 4 for the first 5 out of 8 laps. I enjoyed running with lots of different people sharing some laps and having a chat as we ran. When I reached lap 6, I was on my own, and to be honest, I was ready to just pull it back and take it easy.

Having a blast

I used the time to take some pictures and stopped for some coke and sweets. I still carried on running pretty consistently, but I didn’t feel like pushing for a sub 4. I do feel a little more rested after taking a few weeks off, but now I want to spend a few months getting into better shape, losing a bit of weight and doing some speed work so I feel stronger on my runs.

Enjoying the marathon

I have said it before, but this is almost certainly my last event of the year. I’ve had Kenough. Unless, of course, my wife decides it would be a good idea to sign me up for another.

It was a fun way to end my year of running 31 marathons. It was a pleasure to run with Rik and Robbie, who both completed their 100th half marathons, alongside others all hitting their own personal goals.

Apart from the aid station, the main thing I love about these events is the people. Always full of smiles, and such a mix of abilities and personalities, all out with our own goals, all running together.

After my run, I met with my family for a lovely meal in the pub, which is so nicely positioned next to the finish line. It was lovely to have a family meal together.

Do you have any more events planned this year, or are you done?
